Conduits of Information

We are Conduits of Information…

Before the Age of the Internet, we were mostly receivers of information. We learned our news from watching TV, listening to the radio, or reading newspapers. Knowledge was gained by going to the library and researching books and other forms of print. Talking on the phone or meeting up in person was the main way we interacted and shared our information with family and friends.

Being able to express yourself in other ways than words was a lot more difficult. Making your own music to share, photography, videos, etc. Usually expensive and specialized equipment, as well as the skills to use such equipment, would be required. The ever expanding digital age has changed this all.

The Internet is a vast store of information. It is quick and, now with smartphones, almost accessible anywhere you go. I can’t remember the last time I had to go to a library to research a topic of interest. With the Internet also comes more available sources for news and current events. Twitter and Facebook allow us to share information between people we know, and don’t know, very fast. Advancements in multimedia allow me to use GarageBand to make music, save to the mp3 format and now share it with my friends, or put it up on the Internet for the whole world to enjoy. I can take photos on my DSLR camera, load them onto my iPad and with different apps make beautiful works of art. I have found it so easy now to express myself in many different ways.

These new mediums has also given each of us a voice that we can use. A new and simple way to actually make our own broadcasts. I always like to think of Twitter and a public conference room where everything you do can be seen and heard. Each person can filter what they intake, digest the information and share their own thoughts and opinions. Each person’s “output” is someone else’s “input”. Conduits.

Lest we Forget… A Railway Perspective

Remembrance Day is a day we remember everyone who fought for our country, past and present. That is the basic premise, but I like to take it a bit further.

Today, for most people, railways are a thing of the past. In the “good old days” it was the powerful steam locomotives running the railway, and rail passenger service was one of the main modes of transportation across the country. Now it’s only a nuisance when there is a slow moving train blocking a crossing, or there is a major derailment, or wildlife incidents. But there is so much more!

Most of the products found in stores today was shipped in by train.

A grain train moving 112 loaded cars with 3 locomotives instead of 112 trucks on the road.

Even the location of our cities is because of the railway. In the steam days, the locomotives needed to stop for water and wood/coal approximately every 120 to 130 miles: Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Medicine Hat, Calgary, etc… the list goes on! The province of British Columbia joined the Confederation with a promise that a rail link with Eastern Canada would be established. In short, Canada would not be the country it is today if it was not for the railway!

The following link is a good read about how Canadian Pacific Railway aided in the War efforts and how they salute those who fought for our country: Canadian Pacific Railway and War (from www.cpr.ca)

For my Remembrance Day ceremony I like to find a quiet spot along the railway and remember not just those who fought in the wars, but also for those that built the railway, built the nation, and became the backbone of our war efforts. The following video is from my ceremony last year:

…travelling by train.

One of my closest friends, Wendy, made a comment on Twitter a few days ago:

“I wish I had learnt to enjoy the ride a lot sooner… the journey itself is turning out to be so much fun!”

-not just looking at your goals in life, but enjoying the steps you take to get there. It reminded me of travelling by train across Canada.

Anytime you travel you have to look at your destination. What are you going to do when you are there, where are you going to stay, where to next. It’s so easy to get wrapped up the destination, your goals, that you forget about the journey there.

If you’ve bought the ticket to your destination, it’s now time to board the train! Taking the Silver and Blue class on VIA Rail from Edmonton to Toronto is an awesome experience. You have a bed to sleep in, a hot shower in the morning, 3 delicious meals a day, and a variety of ways to stay entertained. Your basic needs are taken care of on the train while leaving you free to do what ever you want. You can wander between cars to meet new people, play games, or find a quiet spot in the park car to read a book. You can go up in the dome cars to enjoy breathtaking views of our country or stay in your room and watch the beautiful scenery go flying by.

What you can’t control is the train itself. The train is riding on two rails where the path that the train will take has already been decided, and sometimes there are delays or other situations arise that can’t be helped. But a delay is only what you make it out to be. I’ve always been surprised when fellow travellers start getting upset about delays. Complaining about missing connections or deadlines, which will accomplish nothing, instead of accepting the situation they are in. They have probably picked the wrong method of transportation, chosen the wrong path for their destination. I have always seen the delays as a blessing. More time to socialize, more time to have fun, more time to enjoy the scenery. More time to live in the moment- to take in the sights, sounds, people, my thoughts. How often do we wish we had more time to enjoy those special moments in life- why would I complain when it actually happens.

So as Wendy has found out, we need to take a few moments to see where we are on our journeys and take the time to enjoy the trip!

Time is so precious…

Clock

Clock

Life is like a clock
Tick tock
Sleep wake
Eat work
Minute by minute goes by
Never ending
But every once in a while
It’s time to chime
Like the sun breaking through
A long grey winter
What a moment
When there is sound light and laughter
Family and friends
But only too soon
The chime comes to an end
Tick tock

The Most Powerful and Controlling Substance…

…Money!

Our lives are run by money. We need money to buy things we need or want, money to travel anywhere, money to save for retirement! We pay to grow up with a good education so that we can get a good job. Work for 30 some years so that we can finally enjoy retired life. But what about now? I really love my job- can’t imagine doing anything else right now, but there are also so many things that I wish I could have the time to explore.

Money works because it is the most widely accepted “work/reward” system. If you make a product or provide a service, you get rewarded with money. And money is good to spend anywhere on anything. It is a continuous cycle: someone puts in time and effort to make a product, a distributor will buy/reward that person for the product, and to reclaim the cost – sell the product to others with a profit margin so as to buy more products. Can we ever break this perpetuating cycle?

Not right now! Our lives are very structured, which is a good thing. To take that structure away now would probably lead directly to chaos. Change, especially on this scale is hard for people to accept. It will have to be gradual over time. As we invent new technologies that will slowly replace all our jobs we can then give up the ‘addiction’ of money and enjoy other pursuits while we are still young!

An easy way to imagine this- pretend you’ve won the lottery or inherited a large sum of money, now a multi-millionaire or billionaire what do you dream of doing? And just take money out of the equation!
